Extensions Will Not Update
In late June or early July 2025, the ability to update extensions ceased. The Chromium Web Store pinned icon shows updates available. However, I can no longer find any method to perform the update. Any method of updating simply downoads the .crx file instead of updating.
Config
- Ungoogled Chrome Version Version 138.0.7204.157 (Official Build, ungoogled-chromium) (64-bit)
- Installed as Flatpack
- Ubuntu 25.04
-
chrome://flags/#extension-mime-request-handlingto Always prompt for install is SET - Also, chrome://extensions/ Developer Mode = ON
Notes
If I go to chrome://extensions/ the extensions list but a hover says Not From Chrome Store for each extension.
I have two systems--one Pop OS 22.04 and one Ubuntu 25.04. THe issue ONLY affects the Ubuntu 25.04 system. I compared Flatseal permissions and verything looks the same.
The Allow Access to File URLS trick avialble by clicking each extension from Extensions does not help/work/resolve.
Hi, same behavior as described by ganakee on: Version 139.0.7258.154 (Official Build, ungoogled-chromium) (64-bit) Windows 11 Pro Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.4946) Chromium Web Store 1.5.5
Add-on failed to update: uBlock Origin 1.65.0 to 1.66.0
Workaround: Uninstall old version, install new version.
Thanks.
Just for the record, uBlock Origin specifically requires a browser restart in order to load the updated version. There is a way to override that behaviour somewhere in the extension's settings (with the specific option explained in the documentation), but I don't remember the exact location now.
my experience: all [my] extensions [chromium web store, privacy badger, adguard adblocker] require browser restart in ungoogled chromium to update [the extensions page developer mode update button is not sufficient].
Hello, Thank you for your responses. Since uBlock recently released a new version, I tried what you suggested:
- Update uBlock through the Chromium Web Store badge.
- Restart Chromium. It behaves the same way — the version does not update. So I simply used the workaround I mentioned earlier: uninstalling uBlock and installing it again, which updated it successfully.
