try this "usermod -a -G groupName userName"

usermod -a -G root root

Did not help and I suspect it was a kernel change that caused this.

I got the same error msg when I upgraded my phone to Android 9.0 :( But it does well on my phone of Android 8.0. And now I cant update ubuntu any more.
