[Feature Suggestion] Have the .MDL files located in the .trex folder so mod files can reference it

Open Ekozmaster opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

At the moment, MDL files only appear in the captures folder when we make a capture, so we have to copy somewhere else, while maybe using another version of remix/dxvk that wouldn't generate those same MDL files.

Would be nice if we had global, Remix's version specific MDL files inside a standard .trex subfolder so all our mod files could reference them, so if the user updates the runtime, all the mod files will be referencing the new MDL files.

This should also help in creating some Omniverse tooling without having to open a file import dialog only for the user to specify its MDL's location.

REMIX-2379 for tracking.

Hi @Ekozmaster, thanks for your suggestion! Given that MDLs are not guaranteed to be backwards compatible -- yet so far all have been -- we recommend that if you update the runtime between captures, check to make sure that materials do no break. We also suggest you take a look at the ReMix Toolkit which will keep track of its own copy of the most up-to-date MDLs. If you find this to sufficiently answer your question, please close the issue. If not, feel free to comment/message back.

Either way, you have brought up a good point about MDL versioning, and it sounds like we need to discuss next steps internally. Thank you!
