Just noticed that I already reported this early last year here: #4790 I'll close that issue because this one has more information.
The behaviour has changed. Zed stays responsive, but a background thread takes all the CPU instead. After a long time the buffer is updated (depending on the change size).
I guess it is debatable whether this is a bug or a feature request.
