Cannot save on Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII NTSC

Steps to reproduce the issue:

1. Go to a save point
2. Open game menu
3. Try to save -> not possible, it says "No memory card"

Describe the issue in detail:

I checked that I have a wiisxr/saves directory on the SD card... however it is not accessed? How to make the game "see" a memory card please?
