It tries to join the specified server on launch by passing the --server command-line argument to the game (or --quickPlayMultiplayer for modern versions). It should be compatible with any version that supports either of those two options (which I think includes every version that supports multiplayer). The address is in the same format as you would use when joining a server from the client itself in a modern version (<ip>:<port>, port is optional if the server is using the default port).
