Add Curseforge app instance import

Open whitebear60 opened this issue 3 years ago • 7 comments

Role

I used Curseforge modpack download feature prior to 0.16 update, when it removed

Suggestion

I think that it would be good to add Curseforge app import feature, similar to existing FTB app import, to be able to import instances from Curseforge app into MultiMC (if it doesn't violate Curseforge ToS, of course)

Benefit

so that can make instance creation easier for that people that familiar with Curseforge app, but not familiar with FTB app

This suggestion is unique

Likely not going to be added as the curseforge application isn't cross platform

https://support.curseforge.com/en/support/solutions/articles/9000215005-old-api-deprecation-linux-and-standalone-client-faq#Linux-/-Standalone-FAQ If importing from the Curseforge application is implemented, it would be after its Linux client exits Alpha development and supports Minecraft modding with functionality equivalent to its Windows and/or MacOS X counterparts.

Q: What are the features in the Linux / Standalone client? A: Current - WoW only. Planned - Everything that is available on OW version outside of any features requiring in-game overlays or events (Relevant for Windows only).

Q: Why do the Linux/Standalone clients support WoW only? A: For initial alpha release, WoW support was the easiest to deliver quickly. Further support will be rolled out in future updates.

Not sure if this is going to be re-looked at as the standalone app now supports minecraft, which to my knowledge works on Linux

I would like to see Curseforge importing implemented if possible

Unless Curseforge has changed their policy regarding usage of their API, it's still legally impossible. Overwolf and everything built on top of it (e.g. FTB launcher) almost certainly have an internal agreement in place that exempts them from the restrictions of usage of the Curseforge API by third-party software.

Even if MultiMC is assigned an API key to use for interacting with the Curseforge API, the usage agreement prohibits MultiMC users from using this key. Only the developer(s) of MultiMC would be allowed to use the key to interact with Curseforge via MultiMC.

"So just make MultiMC users get API keys"

Not feasible. Curseforge severely limits who gets a key and how many keys are in use. I'd guess they limit it to under a couple thousand keys.

The only solutions–if they even qualify as such–would all be inconvenient—manual search/downloads in an integrated browser (a la Vortex Mod Manager) or importing data from the user's Curseforge or Overwolf-based clients.

This has nothing to do with the API, If you mimic how they do FTB App Import you don't use the API, you first download it from the FTP and them import the already downloaded instance, we want this functionality for the curseforge launcher as well

Woops. I got this confused with the other Curseforge issue I get emails for.
