When I click a search result, the matching search terms aren't highlighted in the document
Greetings, I've identified an issue with the search feature that I thought you should be aware of. I consulted with Sanjin Ibrahimovic on this issue. Sanjin suggested that I file a ticket here.
Expected behavior
- Given I've done a search and I'm on the search results page, and I see documents that contain my search term, and the term is highlighted in the snippet.
- When I click the matching page and the given page loads
- Then I should see the same terms highlighted again on the page
Actual behavior
I don't see the terms highlighted. Instead, I just see the blank page, with no terms highlighted or any indication that I was sent here as part of the search journey.
Impact
The impact of this is that as a user it is difficult for me to see where on the page my search term was located. This significantly undermines the value of the search feature.
Workarounds
- Read the whole text of the page -- this is difficult
- Repeat my search again using the search glass in the upper right corner of the document viewer -- this repeats the search on the whole document and navigates me away from the page to a new listing of search results, starting from the top of the document. I've lost my place and I need to remember what page it was that I was just directed to. I also don't see highlights of my search term on the actual page images, I still see unformatted blocks of OCR text. When I relocated the match I was after and click it, then finally I see the highlighting on the page image after several steps. This requires a concerted effort on the user's part to know ahead of time that they need to memorize the page number, and then keep it in mind as they find their way back to the target page. The compromised usability of this approach is further compounded by an additional bug in the document viewer: on some documents when I click the desired snippet from within the search glass view it doesn't load the highlighted page image, but instead loads a highlighted OCR view of the page. Not clear what determines this unexpected behavior.
