I'll go ahead and close this as we don't really have anything particularly actionable from networkx side. Thanks for opening the discussion @ischmidt20 !

I agree with @dschult we shouldn't really expose every little knob of matplotlib, it will be hard to manage that. The above code example should achieve the same end output....
