"Initial tests failed" and no gears on Dell E6420
Even though enabling / disabling the card works fine, "Initial test fail" and there are no gears on a Dell E6420.
If it matters, ironhide-configure couldn't detect the correct monitor output.
That's on current oneiric, with virtualgl from natty, as mentioned in the relevant bugreport.
I think it's VirtualGL.. I look into it, and get back...
Oneiric packages are now available... :D... please try the virtualgl package in the repository and report back..
I have the same problem but on a different machine: I have a clean ubuntu 11.10 oneiric on an UL30VT. I followed a guide for my ubuntu version for the first ironhide installation and the first time i didn't activated the preinstalled nvidia drivers and the result was that all test succed but when i run "optirun glxgears" i had the same "low" fps than with integrated card. After that i tried follow some suggestion here, and there, going a bit randomly enabling/disabling the drivers and reisntalling ironhide more than once and runned ironhide-configuration a tons of time (I always used a configuration with 4 users, the best i think). Now I reached the situation that the "initial test fails", glxgears start well but with or without "optirun" i get the same fps ~ 60 so no nvidia is used. The script for enabling and disabling the nvidia works great, i can see that from powertop. I already set the "Always enable the nVidia card before disabling" to "NO". How can i fix? Or make sure to have a clean install of ironhide? I want know where i get lost beacause i know that my combination UL30VT+ubuntu11.10+ironhide should work... Thanks!
- 60 fps usually means you're synced to VBlank, glxgears isn't any good at benchmarking gl performance
- I have since disabled Optimus and am running straight nVidia... got ~20% more battery life off of that, and my laptop doesn't overheat (and start the fan) so much anymore (that actually makes sense - two packages are being cooled, not just one).
