Text got replaced when typing in the middle of the line

When I place the caret in the middle of the line, the text to the right of caret got replaced instead of moving along the inserted text.

for example (| is caret):

this is a |long text

it should be:

this is a modified long text

but it becomes:

this is a modifiedt
