"Could not reach the ET server: foo.bar.com:2022'"

Open samuela opened this issue 5 years ago • 4 comments

I have a machine that I can ssh into without any issues:

Host barb
 HostName foo.bar.com
 User myusername

but when I try to use et to connect to it:

> et --verbose=9 barb
Could not reach the ET server: foo.bar.com:2022

without any further information. What does this mean? Why is it not able to connect?

Here's the contents of /tmp/etclient_stderr_2020-10-19_04-40:

addr2line: '/home/skainswo/et': No such file

Usually this means that the et server is not running. Did you start the et service on the server?

For what it is worth: I suspect that port 2022 of barb is not accessable by the et client. ( "firewall" )

To Do @samuela :

  • Check that the et service is running at barb (as hinted three months ago)
  • Check the open port. e.g. netcat -v foo.bar.com 2022
  • Report back

if it is a firewall issue, see issue #274 for a solution

I've been struggling with this same thing, and it was, in fact, a firewall issue. sudo ufw allow 2022 fixed it in a second.

Suggestion: Add to the error message. Maybe a link to a webpage with troubleshooting tips. (I found the "verifying" section of README, but it was running properly so I was at a loss.
