Language name handling needs cleanup

The language selection is handled inconsistently. Languages are passed as friendly names sometimes and as language code at other times, which makes translation back and forth necessary in multiple places. This shows up ugly when using the French UI, where the code needs to check for "Auto-detect" in English and in French. This really becomes necessary if we add more UI languages.
