ASE v3 does not support App Gateway v1
Through recent investigations and input from MS Azure support, it was discovered that App Service Environment v3 does not support v1 of Application Gateway. If a SKU v3 App Service Environment is placed as the backend pool endpoint for a v1 Application Gateway the below error is displayed no matter the backend configuration:
"Backend server certificate is not whitelisted with Application Gateway. Make sure that the certificate uploaded to Application Gateway matches with the certificate configured in your backend server. To learn more visit - https://aka.ms/authcertificatemismatch."
Azure Support have also confirmed that v1 of Application Gateway is not compatible with App Service Environment v3.

@JoshuaK1 Thanks again for the feedback! As I see the conversation on support ticket is in progress, I have assigned the issue to the content author to review further and update the document as appropriate.
Support did some further investigations and found that the initial conclusion was not right. They should have reverted to the customer to work on a solution. #please-close
