Confused about workspace: clean guidance

There is a note on this page which says:

This definition is a supporting definition and is not intended for use directly in a pipeline. This article provides the YAML syntax for this supporting type, but does not show usage examples. For more information on using the definitions that this type supports, see the following definition links.

At a minimum I find this unclear. If this is intended for use in pipelines, what is it used for? Online references imply its use quite often for cleaning the build environment prior to each run.

If this is not intended for pipeline use, what is the preferred way of cleaning the build environment from a pipeline?
