Upload Keystore works, setting "My Gradle settings are entirely set." doesn't.

Step 4 of Configure the build says, If you want to run the build on a device, turn Sign builds on. If you followed the instructions on Getting Started, you can upload your keystore file and fill in the environment variables or check My Gradle settings are entirely set to handle signing automatically.

I had followed the Getting Started Instuecitons but checking My Gradle settings ... didn't work; I had to upload keystore file instead.

It would also be helpful to be more clear about filling in the environment variables, referencing back to MyAndroidKey and the pawwords from Getting Started Step 7.
