edits to make it compile on mint/ubuntu

basically just a bunch of edits to make it compile and make a ton of warnings go away, although I can't say I really know what I was doing, but hey, it at least compiled and appears to run properly, whereas I couldn't get the code to compile at all at first... I love this project and hate that it isn't more popular!
