Optional Installation of TeXworks

Open Hosein-Rahnama opened this issue 9 months ago • 1 comments

This feature has been requested here and did not receive enough attention. So, I would like to bring it up again. One of the main goals that MiKTeX follows is Just Enough TeX . This means that you only install what you need and what you use. I think that installing TeXworks without giving the option to user to accept or not is just against this goal. Therefore, me and all users will be immensely grateful if you consider making installation of TeXworks optional.

I wholeheartedly agree. I get the point of trying to make (La)TeX more approachable for beginners, but forcing everyone to have a specific editor installed is not the way to go.

Instead, the installer could have an option to enable it, similar to setting preferred paper size and such. There's also the TeXworks button in the console. If TeXworks is not installed, it could open a popup with something like "TeXworks is an easy-to-use editor for [...] Would you like to install it?" The same kind of message could be used in the installer.

This way, novices would have a choice of editor made for them to get them started, and people who prefer other editors don't have to have TeXworks installed with a start menu shortcut, file association problems, and an unused executable lying around.
