Badge not updating and no notification when app is closed

I have followed all the instructions for setting up on android. Notifications come through when the app is running in the background. The notification count doesnt appear on the app icon. When the app is closed nothing comes up. Is this an error or is there something I have missed?

Android doesn't support badge count (not impossible - but requires native workarounds as I remember)
