How can the email connection be debugged?

Within the .prod.env file there is this debug line that is not documented

#MAIL_DEBUG=MAIL_SUPPRESS_SEND | False

#MAIL_SUPPRESS_SEND=True

I am trying to find out why my email setting does not work within Mergin but does elsewhere (mail client and other websites).
