Today, I'm working on Noto Sans Tolong Siki. The letters should be as tall as Telugu letters.

The quality is strangely low. I managed to release 3.0 and want to make a sabbatical. Small fixes, add something to Library…

Which chars are problematic? Can you tell me?

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 12:09 marcoT0425

I've tried my best to create it.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 12:09 marcoT0425

After I create the whole font, could you please review the glyph orientations and designs?

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 12:09 marcoT0425

B0: you tried to repeat the craggy font up to curvature. Have you ever checked handwritten specimen? B1: looks wide B2: looks cramped B6, B7 etc: how do you choose whether stroke’s butt is horizontal or perpendicular? B8 etc: where lines meet, it’s tempting to make a line thinner I don’t see whether there’s optical compensation BA etc: doesn’t look in harmony C5: you forget that it’s a font rather than a collection of glyphs. And it will be surely written alongside Devanagari, whose capacity is greater. Why are you making it so wide?

C0: really sharp corner here?

You seemingly don’t see how the quill should go in handwritten text.

I found it in Twitter/X.

B6 and B7 is fine. B6 should be more condensed

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

The curvature should look like this.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

B1 and B2 are hard to draw. After I complete the whole font, can you make some enhancements? I’ll send an .sfd file to you

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

C0 is rounded but Unifont displays as a sharped corner due to technical limitations.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

B2 needs to be more condensed

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 15 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

That craggy font is done better than yours! Have you ever seen handwritten specimen? For unprinted scripts the first you should do is to explore how they write.

Mercury13 avatar Sep 16 '25 06:09 Mercury13

…I mean, they have no printed tradition, and computer fonts are probably drawn by complete amateurs, and don’t look at computer fonts AT ALL!

Mercury13 avatar Sep 16 '25 06:09 Mercury13

There is not handwriting specimens for this script. The designs are based on Unifont!!

For example, this is a specimen of the handwriting of the Ho Warang Chiti script.

Thanks for giving the link of the tutorial of the Tolong Siki language. When I’m free, I’ll style or learn the manuscript(s) of this font.

This is the handwritten version of the South Asian Kurukh language.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

B1 and B2 are more condensed

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

I’ll modify B6 to B8 to a more condensed weight.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

Did you mean condensing the glyphs to make them more consistent to other Asian scripts?

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

If I finished the whole font, can you please highlight the glyphs in 4 different colours and explain the reason why the glyph is designed well/badly.

🟥 Poor design 🟧 Problematic design 🟨 Good design 🟩 Excellent design

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

In B6, I’ll choose the stroke butt to horizontal, like the “U” in Helvetica, to parallel the design of other Telugu characters.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

C5, because I didn’t condense the glyph of the base of B6.

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

C6 is OK

marcoT0425 avatar Sep 16 '25 23:09 marcoT0425

So, where’s the font?

Mercury13 avatar Sep 19 '25 12:09 Mercury13

The font is WIP
