Given that the gem is in a rough state I think let's close this for now as it adds more complexity, might be something to revisit in the future.
I'm also confused from the docs how one should/shouldn't shutdown the cache OnSleep, and if so how to recover back to a functioning state when the app wakes back up.

I rolled back to Amazon Linux 2 and have not tried the newer versions again since. We connect to RDS although I don't think it should matter.
