When in a group, players will often not have a tab available for group chat. Sometimes, if you ask players to type a message in group chat, the tab will show up. Often when messages for player status-changes get put in group chat (leader change, players leaving group, etc) you will have a flashing message indicator, but no group chat available to see what the status change is.

(I personally see it every time I play.)
