Protontricks tells me i'm running a outdated version of wine how do it get it to recognize the current version i have?
The version of Wine depends on the Proton version used by the game. For example, if your game is configured to use Proton 7.0 then Winetricks will detect Wine 7.0. Proton is pretty much a version of Wine with a few modifications and additions to improve its compatibility and performance with Windows games, with the version number following its Wine counterpart.
Anyway, in most cases you can safely ignore this warning. If this is causing problems, you can configure a newer Proton version for the game under Properties -> Compatibility -> Force the user of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool -> Select Proton version. This is not always preferable and sometimes Steam might preselect an older Proton version for a game because newer versions have regressions.
