Description:

Even with gesture nav off on the phone, Vespucci still defaults to fullscreen mode with no visible navigation options.

Starting with version 17.1 the behaviour is (on new installs only)

  • Android 4.4 to 10: if the device has soft buttons (and if detectable, nav gestures are not being used) use full screen/immersive mode as default (this is the same as the behaviour of prior versions).
  • Android 11 and later: don't do anything special, as users that are concerned about screen real estate can universally use navigation gestures if they want to, see https://support.google.com/android/answer/9079644?hl=en

We could potentially extend the behaviour change back to 10 as that is when the nav gestures were 1st introduced widely and on the other hand vendor support for immersive mode started going even more down the drain.
