Redesign directory to merge people list into it

Open rgoj opened this issue 4 years ago • 2 comments

Notes from Tom's requirements doc:

Combining the user list with the directory

This is another low priority one.

At the moment we have a list of people in two places. Ideally we would have only the Directory. Admin users would be able to add or import people directly here as well as adjust permissions.

The directory would also have a better format to list users in different ways such as in a table showing various fields, sorted as a user pleases."

I'm not sure this is such a good idea. It's not immediately obvious (and so this might be a wider problem), but the directory is actually tightly linked to the dataset you are viewing. Without a circle map open, there can be no "directory view" whereas you might want to edit users even before you create any maps.

That's not to say that this is how things need to stay... we could have a view that would show what circles a user is in across all maps, but that is a different kettle of fish. In other words, there's more to this story than meets the eye and we'd need to put in some thinking into resolving these issues first.

There's no stopping us from adding a link to the users list from the directory for example. Or even a link to edit a user's profile information once we get to that functionality.

Another support ticket mentioning this being confusing: https://app.intercom.com/a/inbox/q3x5lnhp/inbox/conversation/106323200016008

In this case I think just adding a link to the settings page would've helped.

@tomnixon Interesting that we just recently talked about this part of this story:

There's no stopping us from adding a link to the users list from the directory for example. Or even a link to edit a user's profile information once we get to that functionality.

Maybe we should add that link now that I've just been in the directory and so can more easily work with that code, lol? 😅 Just a thought I'd share as I was just thinking about it. Maybe something to circle back to next week.

Also, so nice to be circling back to old issues gradually! :)
