seems to still show the shield slot with hotbar enabled in hud, not sure where the code that checks if the slot is empty for that is

What? I think you're thinking `hold` mode means when you hold down the mouse button, it just holds the button down for you basically.

Not valid, the bypass is literally that the face is invalid, 1.8 servers are fine with this for some reason, but modern versions aren't.
