Update ruined everything

Open garugc opened this issue 4 months ago • 10 comments

I'm really annoyed with you guys right now. Really! I didn't do an update, but make.md is updated anyway. OK. Now I have the following scenario:

  1. All the tables that I painstakingly created over months of detailed work are destroyed. They now only contain two entries; the rest has been deleted.

  2. Most of the design settings I had made in Obsidian have been deleted. I first need to get an overview of the situation.

  3. Many notes that existed before the update have been completely deleted—they are not even in the trash. These were extremely important notes. I now first need to find out which ones are affected.

  4. MetaBind and probably other plugins have been blocked by you. I would have liked to have known this BEFORE the update. I urgently need MetaBind and had spent months working on hundreds of files to create a proper system in Obsidian, which you have completely destroyed with this update.

What’s most likely is happening is a crash on startup causing the issue. The data should be in tact since data is not changed by the plugin without explicit user actions and you can try an earlier release from the GitHub releases to see if it fixes the issue. If you can provide some logs from obsidian that will help me narrow down the specific issue so it can be patched. Thanks for your patience

Which logs should I send and where can I get them?

Meta Bind is not functional because, in addition to numerous notes and images, its main.js file has also been deleted. I wonder how random the deletion was. I was able to find 50 deleted files in my backup folder in Dropbox, which I have now reconstructed. At first glance, dozens of other files that were not in the trash are missing. I am trying to reconstruct them using file recovery. My problem is that I can only see what has been deleted if the file was embedded somewhere. Then an error message is displayed. But I have several hundred notes that are not embedded anywhere. I don't know if any of them have been deleted.

You can retrieve the logs from Obsidian, on Windows/Linux it's Control-Shift-I and Mac it's Command-Option-I. I understand it must be very frustrating and I take any reports of data loss very seriously, which is why make.md is built so that it does not do any modifications to files as interacting with the rich ecosystem of Obsidian plug-ins can create fragility and unexpected behaviours. I'm not sure what has caused the issue and hope we can track it down and make sure the data is fine.

I apologize if my message came across as grumpy, but I'm currently facing a huge mess. I don't understand why Obsidian simply installed an update. Apparently, Obsidian itself was also updated, along with Make.md, and at that exact moment, Syncthing (which I use to sync my data between computers) seems to have failed. I suspect that Syncthing has irrevocably deleted the files.

The developer console contains a lot of entries, many of which are marked in red. Here is a screenshot of the upper section. Is there any way to export the whole thing so that I can send it? I'm going to bed now. I'll be in touch again tomorrow.

You can filter by make-md and copy and Control-A Control-C

To restore the view of my tables, I would need to know the name of the file in which the view settings are stored. I found some backup files, including “context.mdb” and “views.mdb.”

log_make-md.txt

Will get back to you to see if the issues in the logs are critical issues, but the issues is most likely due to context.mdb and views.mdb files being removed based on what you described during sync, these are supposed to be located in the .space subfolder of the folder which has the data and modifications.

I was able to restore the view with the context files from my backup. That's good news.
