Access history

Open goyalyashpal opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

Hello, is there some way i can access the chat history offline? If not, i think this feature is quite important for me.

I know that chat history is saved on the device, but to see that, u have to go online and join the channel too, which is a bit inconvenient thing to do just to be able to look old/existing chat logs {and i dont even remember what channels they were}.

Side: can a channel be watched without joining?? i.e. the online chats.

You can not watch channels w/o joining on IRC. The other options are not currently supported.

@MCMrARM I think this is about "reviewing" rather than "watching".

It would be helpful to be able to open a chat log file in say, a text editor, and not be restricted to just using this app to view it.

Please add "write storage" permission to the manifest, and add the ability to choose where the logs are stored. The user won't be prompted for it until it's actually needed, so if they allow logs to remain in the app's private storage, they'll never be prompted. If they ask for them to be moved to shared storage (which would make them accessible to other apps such as a text editor), then the permission prompt should not worry them.

If nothing else, doing this would make it possible to uninstall and reinstall the app without losing ones entire message history.

I do get the point that message logs contain sensitive information that you may not want to be accessible to every app on your device, but it should ultimately be up to the user to decide. So as an alternative to writing logs directly into shared storage, it should be possible to move or copy logs to shared storage, either in bulk or selectively.

Those of us who are already using the app would appreciate that functionality too, so that we can recover the logs we've already recorded.

all that said...

@yashpalgoyal1304 - consider using a proxy such as ZNC that can keep logs for you. (Among the many wierd choices of words associated with IRC, such proxies are called "bouncers".)
