Multiplayer button sometimes returns to the Main Menu

Works fine selecting to play modded, then selecting mods. Then comes up the choice between Single Player and Multiplayer. Choosing Single Player works fine, but if I select the Multiplayer option to play modded multiplayer, the 'Configuring game data... Please wait' popup comes up and then it just takes me back to the Main Menu. The multiplayer option is there, I just can't access it.
