Doc support does not work

If I don't install antiword I get nothing, and if I do I get a warning: I'm afraid the text stream of this file is too small to handle.

Is there a different version I'm not getting? Decoding a sample file containing the characters "doc", and a larger file with many lines. Antiword seems very old, and I'm testing it using a Word 97/2003 format file.

Using the default version of antiword: 0.37.
