And no updates here for awhile, is this project dead?

Kevin, the IndexTank product no longer exists under that name, the company that built it was acquired by LinkedIn almost a year ago. The product was open-sourced as part of the acquisition deal, giving other entrepreneurs the chance to continue the business. Several did exactly that, for example Searchify.com runs this code. So no, the project is not dead, although there is little movement here.
