Automated regression detection for metrics

Currently it is my understanding that in order to have metrics 'regress', a threshold has to be set.

Instead, would it be possible to calculate a standard deviation and use some number of standard deviations to automatically raise regressions?

One concern is that then the number of standard deviations per metrics may still need to be configurable, similar to the threshold; but perhaps there is some default that will fit most use-cases? Perhaps the default number of standard deviations could be a project default.
