The Climb frame rate cut in half / stuttering

Open Nicsky1 opened this issue 3 years ago • 11 comments

Do not report issues when using the Virtual Desktop or ALVR drivers for SteamVR, this is not supported by Revive.

Describe the bug The frame rate is cut in half and stutters continuously on GPU and CPU. I am also getting a Source2-Warning error popping up every time I close out the game that I can't get rid of (which is likely the problem) that says "Only one instance of the game can be running at one time." The Climb revive fps

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior: This happens right away when the game loads into the opening menu.

Expected behavior It use to run perfectly on my valve index at 90 fps and higher. All other revive games are still working perfectly, except this one.

Environment (please complete the following information):

  • App: [The Climb]
  • OS: [Win10]
  • Headset: [Index]

Versions (please complete the following information):

  • Revive: 2.1.1.0
  • SteamVR: beta 1.17.10

Additional context This is one of my favorite VR games ever and I would love to have it working again. I have tried multiple combinations of different versions of revive, steamvr, and nvidia drivers with no luck. I even re-formatted my PC and no luck.

Have you tried manually injecting the game using Revive version that is under 2.0?

I just tried, and unfortunately it's still doing the same thing. I'm willing to try any other suggestion though, thanks!

After quite a bit of testing, I've discovered the frame rate is perfectly smooth if I uninstall the Nvidia Audio drivers - but then I don't have any sound :(. Does anyone know a work-around for this? I've tried quite a few suggested tricks but none of them have worked. Thanks if you can help!

Hey @Nicsky1 , did you get any further with this issue?

Been stuck with exactly same problem. I didn't even get around to getting smooth FPS after uninstalling Nvidia Audio Drivers, was exactly the same.. being honest, I wouldn't mind having smooth FPS and no sound.

Sadly this issue has not been resolved. If anyone has it working, please share how. I would love to play this game again and I'm just waiting until someone figures out the solution. Thanks if anyone can help!

Sad times. Can you at least tell me how you managed to get fluid FPS without sound? Maybe I missed something.

Is there ANYONE out there with Index that has this game running fluid nowadays?

Same problem here using a vive pro 2, didn't try the nvidia audio drivers technique but i'd rather play with sound !

Few months later I decided to give it a go again, using Revive 2.1.1 with Valve Index and the latest The Climb update 1.5.0.16 from the Oculus store. Flawless FPS, no issues, all graphics/menu displaying correctly, sound as well.

Edit: it broke again at one point, stutter came back.

Any chance anyone has gotten this to work? I tried reverting to an old Revive and still no go. Not sure what the issue is. I can get into the menu but frames are terrible and it doesn't detect the Rift sensor.

If anyone encounters this post, here are two potential solutions:

For Nvidia cards (works flawless):

  • Go to Nvidia Control Panel and change settings for Climb.exe "Vertical Sync" to "Fast", remember to click Apply in bottom right

Back-up option in case (works, but with small stutter here and there, depends on your CPU):

  • Once the game is started, open Task Manager in Windows
  • Go to "Details" tab
  • Find "Climb.exe", right click and choose "Set Affinity"
  • Deselect all CPUs apart from CPU 0 and 1

Thank you! It worked flawlessly! I am going to submit on Reddit. I cannot believe I got this game working again!

Also, the no sensor issue is because one of my base stations wasn't active.
