Hide/mark communities that are inactive/dead

Requirements

  • [x] This is a feature request and not a bug report. Otherwise, please create a new bug report instead.
  • [x] Please check to see if this request (or a similar one) already exists.
  • [x] It's a single feature. Please don't request multiple features in one issue.

Describe the feature you'd like

We have a lot of communities made like 2 years ago that aren't used anymore. Some people think the abandoned ones should be deleted, but it seems like admins will never do this, and I don't think they should be deleted anyways.

I was thinking there could be some feature to semi-hide them, dim them, or make it more obvious on the search results page or sidebar.

Maybe if there hasn't been a post/comment/vote in the past 30 days?

Or if it's completely inactive AND there is another community with the same name that is way more active and offer that one as a suggestion (I know they aren't always comparable but that's why it's just a suggestion for the user?).

Or maybe there can be a marker if all the moderators are inactive. Which would also be a good call-to-action to ask the admins to add more moderators. (Although I think a remote instance would not have accurate info about active accounts, this would maybe have to be a flag that gets calculated locally and federated?)

Sorry I know this is some crazy rambling brainstorming lol. Context: https://lemmy.world/comment/17479400

The scaled sort does the opposite, and boosts inactive/smaller communities so they get more attention.

I'm not sure the best way of cleaning up dead communities besides a community to request dead communities. Even if there inactive, they aren't hurting anything. Missing mods is the main problem.

I'm not sure how useful it'd be to show anything in the UI anyway, since the last post being X days ago, and the sidebar active counts are already the best indicators.

Yea maybe something that shows up on the lists/search results so that you don't have to open every community to check them all.

Dead communities don't harm anything, and if someone wants to reclaim them, they can make a request to their admin.
