Account creation spins instead of showing error to user when username/e-mail is in use

Issue Summary

I tried to make an account recently and after filling out the sign up page and clicking the "Sign Up" button, the button changed to a spinner animation and just sat indefinitely (I left it overnight a few times).

I guessed that it was a server error or signups were disabled due to being slammed by people fleeing Reddit because of a recent announcement, that's what brought me here.

Instead it was because I already had an old account.

Steps to Reproduce

0. Have an existing account
1. Go to the Sign Up page
2. Fill in the info, using the same username and/or e-mail as the existing account (I have not checked the two items individually)
3. Click Sign Up. The button will become a spinner
4. Wait.
5. Keep waiting
6. Make bad guesses about the cause of the issue

Technical details

• Browser: Chrome 112.0.5615.50 (Official Build) (64-bit), unfortunately on Windows (10). Tested both with and without extensions. (normal and Guest profiles)
• "Any browser console errors?" None that I could decipher that seemed related. I did try to look for that, but didn't know what to look for.

Expected Behavior

The page should stop spinning and notify the user which one or both of the username and the e-mail are already in use. Perhaps even offering a direct link to the Reset Password feature.

Can confirm had this issue trying a username that was already taken. Kind of assumed Lemmy would tell me if the username was taken as I was filling in the username field.

This appears to be a back-end bug, not forwarding the error message.

I'm also having this same issue, signed up with my email address at lemmy.world, someone created a more specific instance for my region and I deleted my account to recreate on my regional instance, getting constant spinning and can't create an account. Tried a different email with the same username and getting the same issue, think I've now killed the ability to create a new account against the second email also.
