Some terminal emulators allow users to change the background image through the GUI but strangely enough they don't have any way to change it via a command (I had this issue with the default mac terminal). As such, the only way to change the background is to locate and directly change the profile settings configuration file. But this can get messy, so I hope there is a command in mate to do this.

Maybe you should look at gconf or dconf, Tilix store its setting there. Maybe gnome-terminale behave the same way
