[Feature Request] Allow changing order of current homescreen pages

Open abigdeel opened this issue 2 years ago • 20 comments

Not sure how feasible or easy this is to implement, but it would be great to allow for changing the order of the home screens around.

Sometimes I change up the layout for a homescreen as a test and then later want to move it closer to the front or near a related page of icons/folders. I think Nova Launcher has this functionality, so it's easy to swap around the homescreens afterwards.

Not possible with Lawnchair. Ends up taking a while to do any kind of reorganization of my icons and folders.

Other than the actual technical implementation of it that can be not the easiest, the main issue might be that the current behavior of the Home Screen does not have a layout that would support this. On some launchers get enter an overview state which lets you add widgets, arrange pages, etc. but on Lawnchair you just get a Pop-Up menu.

I can look into implementing it but I think the UI UX aspect of it should be thought of first.

Maybe the UI should be similar to what V2 does: another option in the pill: Screenshot_2022-06-07-19-12-40-14_3b881d4c06d4cbc1b5e5ddba75e2aac5.jpg

When the button is pressed, maybe show this UI: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/70206496/172366227-08a116ee-4ec9-4da7-bdaa-6f277cce9d66.mp4

With a few things changed:

  • Remove the dock, replace it with a "Cancel" and "Done" button below
  • Instead of moving the icons (which is in the video), the expanded "overview" layout will simply show. You could hold-and-drop the desktop pages.
  • A "Home" icon/button should be near the top. Clicking it makes the page be the home/default page.
  • If you hold a page, the "home" icon should change to a "Remove"/"Delete" button, and when the page is dragged there, it'll be deleted and a small bar is shown.

Here's a drawing of what I said: IMG_20220607_192312-min.jpg

It's been years since the first FR for this feature was created. Meanwhile, there are alternatives.

I switched from Lawnchair to Microsoft Launcher, it is basically the same but with all the most useful features that never made it into Lawnchair: Smart folder, 2 page dock, default homescreen selection and even a microgrid for widgets, so that you can easily put your widgets precisely on the screen, instead of adhering to your icon grid. Just do not opt-in to any of their features that require an account or internet connection, do not give it permissions to address book when it asks for it. It will work perfectly, without sharing your data or using the cloud for 'smart' features. The result is the most clean Android Launcher that stays very close to the regular launcher, without all google shizzle on your screen.

Does Microsoft Launcher support Quick Switch? That's basically my primary requirement for a launcher. I don't want to deal with Android jankiness years later because of whatever changes Android 12(?) made.

What's Quick Switch?

What's Quick Switch?

https://www.xda-developers.com/quickswitch-magisk-module-android-pie-recents-launchers/

Here, this should help. Basically, it's the integration with the Recent open apps, etc. I used Nova Launcher for a long time but for some reason, they won't be supporting quick switch.

Without quick switch support you get the double transition animations or other weirdness when going home or checking recent apps.

Sorry I don't meddle with bootloader unlocking and stuff like that. That's in the past for me. It supports recent apps and I do not notice anything of the weirdness you mention. My experiences are based on Android 12 on a Pixel 4a (gf) and my Samsung S20 that I replaced yesterday with the Zenfone 9.

@Goooler, can you check with latest lawnchair2 from the play store?

As long as I remember, the version 2 had it implemented and it was very useful. However, this version looks from my point of view as a bastard child. It had only this one version, the development then stopped for years and now, years after it has begun again from (probably) previous release right to the new version 12.x, which misses some of these features 2 had already implemented. Now version 2 is more than 3 years unmaintained, last current release is 6 months old, hopefully not discontinued too.

We'll take a look.

This is basically the one problem I have with this launcher (this isn't that useful of a comment, but it's probably more useful than a bot marking this as stale again ;)).

Is the development started somewhere, in a branch? Or is it still in the backlog? Thanks
