New Ui

Open marcodallago opened this issue 6 years ago • 2 comments

Hello everyone! Last April I faulty pulled a request regarding a new UI for the software. In the discussion we talked about using Material for Boostrap, all the problems related to the UI. Unfortunately I've been having several time issue, but recently I spent a few minutes thinking on how the whole system could be visually changed. I'll share a quick sketch that I made, like I said I didn't put so much tought on it and I'm not sure this is a way to go. The main idea is to have a modular grid design. Those modules are like cards that float over the grid, and give everyone the chance to make their own workspace.

Let me know what you think! This is just a raw base, but the concept could grow up

FYI I tried this ( modular grid with drag and drop redistribution of tools ) for something very similar to laserweb ( a control interface for cnc machines I was working on a few years back ) and it really wasn't a great fit ergonomically. I think there's a good reason why you don't often find this in popular/commercial software packages. In particular, having the actual path display ( bottom left in your image ) be drag-droppable instead of the background, is terrible. Of course it's possible somebody else might be able to get it to work, just reporting my experience.

Alternatively, instead of an interface you can edit all the time, it might be better to simply have an interface configurator ( with drag and drop some thing ) in the software's configuration options.

Oh also I think chilipeppr does this ( at least in part ), so maybe look at that.

Hi, what about using Material UI React? https://material-ui-next.com

I can help designer to build an interface example on adobe xd too.

Now that I'm building my laser cutter, I'm experimenting on really using laserweb and the three steps and the sequencial menu seems obvious for the way it works but kinda rigid. UI could provide a better experience. I really like Laserweb btw. What do you think?
