I see there were intentions of making a similar patch for MelonDS: https://github.com/LRFLEW/AM64DS_DeSmuME/issues/6#issuecomment-1208823528

Regardless, I got the Windows version of DeSmuME to work this way:

  1. Get old Windows version of DeSmuME (0.9.9) and run it under Wine, use Config > Control Config. This is necessary since newer DeSmuME versions crash in this scenario
  2. Download the latest DeSmuME version, and use the desmume.ini file generated earlier
  3. Go through the other steps as per project's README

I also tried to build the Linux version by cloning the repo, but I couldn't find "GBA Slot 2", and apparently a lot of functionality is missing from the Linux version of DeSmuME.
