don't know how to/can't connect 2 pokemon instances to trade

Hi, I'm trying to connect 2 open pokemon cartridges. The way to do that seems to be clicking the connectivity menu, and then the Game Link Cable & Infrared submenu, but instead of being selected or opening a submenu, the connectivity menu just gets closed and remains with None selected.
