View Resizing when side menu is open

When the side menu opens, it pushes everything in the main screen view to the right and off the screen. Is there a way to dynamically resize the contents on the main screen view to fit the new smaller window with the side menu opened and then back to normal when the side menu closes instead of pushing off the entire main screen view off the screen.
