Google Play Publishing

To publish the Profitocracy on the Google Play Market we need a group of testers for Android devices. So if you want to become a tester you can find my contacts to reach me at the following website: https://krawmire.github.io

This is weird, I published 4 apps from the ground-up in play console in the last year as part of my daily job and I never had to do that. They want you to do it but you can skip it and go straight to sending your application for validation.

Unless they explicitly told you that you need to do that, which I would be surprised

Thank you for your suggestion. But unfortunately I have found this post on the Play Console Help..

At the Profitocracy Google Play Console page I get this: Image

So, as I suppose, there's no way except of following this weird rules.

Oh wow, that's the first time I see this. It sucks! Like I said, published 4 apps in the last year, never seen that. I'll dig a little to see why you get that.

Ok so turns out that's a "new thing" since November 2023 for all new accounts.

It’s about when and how their Google Play developer account was created.

What changed Since 13 November 2023 every new personal developer account must prove the app has been properly exercised before it can reach the Production track.

The rule is: run a closed (beta) test with a minimum of 12 opted‑in testers for at least 14 consecutive days, then apply for “Production access”. Google Help

Google originally set the bar at 20 testers. In December 2024 the requirement was relaxed to 12 testers; some consoles still show “15” or “20” while the rollout finishes, so the exact number your friend sees can vary. Adalo

Why you don’t see it Your Play Console account was likely created before 13 Nov 2023 or it’s an Organisation‑type account. Those accounts are grandfathered: they can push a first release straight to Production after the usual content‑ and policy‑review.

Once an account has already shipped at least one Production release, the extra “closed‑test first” gate disappears for future apps.

I don't see it on my end because my Play Console account is much older than that and I'm getting grandfathered. As for the apps I published at work, they use Organization Accounts which are not impacted by this.

Yeah, that really sucks. So, for now, I have another two options:

  • Publishing to the F-Droid - FOSS Android apps. It is not done yet, but could be in future;
  • Publishing to the RuStore - easier publishing process. Profitocracy is already published there, but I don't share the link to the app's page, because I don't know how it will be treated by the community :(

F-Droid is probably the safest bet for now. Agree with you that unfortunately, anything hosted on ru domain will probably get the hate and you clearly don't want to get into some politic fights.

Other issue I see thought is Android is getting a lot more strict on side-loading lately and they will probably continue a lot more in that way in the coming months.

Have you thought about posting on Reddit (that were I found this!) again to try to get some traction and maybe some people to get into the closed beta track? I'm pretty sure that'll work out and now that you have #38 (french translation) and soon #37 (spanish) closed, that might help getting more people on board :)

I would gladly join the closed beta to help you out a little more ;)

Yes, I agree that F-Droid would be the safest option in this case.

I really appreciate your help in improving the Profitocracy and your interest in this project. For me, it's ... surprising :)

Soon I will share a new post on Reddit in order to attract more people to the project, especially to invite them to participate in beta testing. Thank you for your suggestion!

To be honest, I always wanted to do some open-source stuff in my free time. I was thinking about starting an app as well that would be fully-local storage without any server sync and whatnot. When I saw your app on Reddit, it clicked because you pretty much had the same idea, although in a another area than the idea I have. By keeping data locally, you put user in full control of their data, and that's what I was looking to achieve as well so I figured out why not help you out :)

Also a great opportunity to tackle some XAML MAUI, I've been doing some Blazor Hybrid over the last year and a half, never really looked at the XAML part of it. So a great learning experience. I also thought that maybe my experience could help you out :)

I'm really glad to hear that.

I was always wondering why personal budget applications are not open-source in most. This is my financial data and I don't want to share it with anybody, especially when there is no reason to expose it.

Also, I haven't found any suitable app for my personal usage, so I decided to make one on my own, and then made it open-source.

Finally, the app has been successfully published to Google Play! The issue has been resolved, and the app is now available for download. Here is the link to the Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.krawmire.profitocracy

Also, I have already added the Google Play link to the README. So this issue has been fixed with #62

Very nice! Congrats! I haven't heared back in a while, I guess that you found the number of tester you needed in the end :)

Thank you! That was not easy, tbh, but it has finally happened.
