How to write a database based adapter?

we are writing a gaufrette adapter for phpcr-odm. one issue we are unhappy with is that we probably should flush the changes after each write operation. what do you think of this approach? https://github.com/symfony-cmf/MediaBundle/issues/7 - or is there a generic kind of flush or transactionEnd() support in gaufrette to have it call my adapter on closing so it can flush everything at once?
