escape HTML

I am not sure if I miss something in the docs but is there any way to escape HTML e.g. do not get it rendered in a list of articles ? I couldn't find anything to do that. I also didn't find a way to trim a long text from the template (e.g. show just the first 50 characters of a long field like the body of a blog post..)
