Normally I don't have too much images in my posts, but yes, could be a nice approach to the mobile redesign.

Thats a shame. I wonder if this is something thats more aimed towards a plugin for Ghost when they are released?

Another good solution added in first comment: https://github.com/zafree/pilpil

The problem of this solution is the html markup, but need to investigate, looks tiny and focused.
