King Of The Gem game mode, Infinite Brambles variant

  • King Of The Gem is similar to Last Man Standing, but with an additional objective: a Gem. Anyone who holds this for 5 seconds wins the round without having to engage in any combat. But of course, that means making yourself the primary target for all other players! And even if one manages to take down their opponents, they still have to grab the Gem... if you put your Bramble or Laser arrows in just the right places, you might be able to prevent your enemies from getting the prize!
  • Infinite Brambles is what it says on the tin. Brambles never decay unless they are burning.

Both of these are not playtested, because I don't have friends I can just order to come here to test video games, but I think the mode is complete enough to pass on. Maybe you guys can play a couple rounds. I think it might be really fun to play KOTG with the Trigger Corpses or Return As Ghosts variants, trying to keep the last man standing from getting to the Gem, or the Infinite Brambles variant, forcing whoever wants to grab the Gem to navigate through them carefully.

Wooh, sounds nice! I'll try to find some interested friends for play-testing and making a GIF or two. ~~However, in a quick solo test (after applying a0b5149) stealing the gem from a player appears to set the gem's timer to 0 and end the round immediately, is that intended?~~ Ok, I didn't expect it to short-cut the round when there is only one remaining player. Regarding your new variant, the name and icon seem to be - imo - a bit misleading since both arrows and brambles are still very much finite :) . Maybe something more along 'persistent brambles'?

Sorry for taking so long to answer, it took longer to assemble some friends to play-test this than anticipated. First round of play-testing of "King of the Gem" brought forth the following feedback:

  • Usually, "King of the hill"-style game modes allow respawn and are about who holds the target for the longest amount of time -- playing this without any respawns changes the dynamics from "King of the hill" to a more deathmatch-like game mode. We should try how this plays with respawns enabled.
  • 5 seconds are a bit short for this kind of mode -- as it stands now, it's practically impossible to take the gem from someone who's already got it. This gives an immense advantage to whoever spawns closest to the gem.
  • Maybe dashing could make you lose the gem, too? As mentioned above, the holder of the gem is at an immense advantage to the rest of players, and as soon as said player loses the gem (by dying), they're out of the game for good, which is somewhat frustrating.

The general feeling of this is that the gem-holder needs to be nerfed, but apart from that, it makes for a very frantic and dynamic game. Good work. :)

Then, but this might just be me and my perfectionism, but the icon has a lot less detail than the other game mode icons, so I may end up redoing it or adding more detail.

Unfortunately, we didn't yet have the time to check out the "persistent bramble" variant.
