The specified string is not in the form required for an email address

Open grannysmith59 opened this issue 4 years ago • 26 comments

Hi, I've just installed v1.4.4 on another PC, and when testing the email as part of the setup wizzard, I get this error message:

"The specified string is not in the form required for an email address"

When setting notifications, the MQTT buttons don't remain "lit up" to show that they are enabled

There's also a typo in the add "Emal" Addresses dialog

grannysmith59 avatar Jan 01 '21 19:01 grannysmith59

There are 3 buttons that should turn green when clicked. The first is on the main screen for “continuous” video. The last 2 are on the area notification settings for MQTT.

If you click on them they should go green. If you are saying that none of them do the I’m stumped right now. It is pretty basic functionality of the .NET Framework (the tool used to create the app) and Windows itself. If that is true then I’ll need to do some research. Do you have any Windows “themes” setup. Even then that should work.

Thanks for the spelling report. I’ll fix it in the next release.

Regarding the email problem: What is the email address you are trying to send the test message to? They should be in the standard format ([email protected]). I may need to add some error checking here. Did you leave the address blank?

Sorry Ken, I should have been clearer, they turn green when clicked, but I expected them to stay green next time I went into that screen.

Otherwise there's no way of knowing if it's on, or not, and no way to disable the mqtt notifications.

I switched the install to another pc, because I wasn't getting any notifications via mqtt or email.

Thanks, and a happy new year,

Alan

Thanks you are right. This is a big bug. Either I’ll fix it for the next release or immediately. I hate to have a new release every other day but this one is big enough that I probably should since it affects functionality

At first glance I am not seeing it on my machine. I tried it and it worked for me. This will need some further research. I’ll look at it today.

Have you tried email notifications, and are they working?

Thanks very much for finding the MQTT bug. This was a bad one that would affect MQTT functionality. Therefore, I put Version 1.4.5 on Github.

OK, I was able to reproduce the problem. The problem is not in the destination email address but in your sending email address. If I use [email protected] as the sender it works. If I use Ken.Koch it doesn’t.

Normally when I setup my email in Outlook/whatever I just use Ken.Koch. I think that Outlook won’t even work if I use [email protected].

Could you try using your full email address with the @PlusDomain added. It is possible that your email account won’t work that way, but it might.

If the sending function I use won’t work without the full user name plus domain I may need to enforce the use of it that way. However, it is also possible that there are options that will allow me to send it the way you are expecting. This will need some further research.

Well, as far as I can tell it does require that the user name include the @domain part.

There is an option to have the domain entered separately, and then just use the user name: “John.smith”. In another entry you would be required to have to enter the domain (foo.bar) entered. Then the built-in function would create the “[email protected]” automatically behind the scenes. The problem is that I think that it would probably error out if someone entered [email protected] and then Domain: “foo.bar”.

I think that the way it is now (combined) would be better as long as I let people know that the @domain part is required if the user doesn’t enter it.

I know that this is confusing. In fact, I think I ran across it 6+ months ago and forgot about it.

No email notifications aren't working either, I have email notifications set up to trigger every time I walk down my hallway, and haven't received any yet

When adding new addresses into the "Set notifications", I just received this error message too:

"Destination array is not long enough to copy all the items in the collection. Check array index and length"

Well, I know for sure it won’t work without the @gmail.com part in the email user. I’ll fix that now to make it clear it is required.

If you were entering that as part your Email User Name I’m not sure what the problem is. I’ll look into it further.

Were you on a different computer when it worked than when it didn’t?

One thing at a time I guess.

Just installed 1.4.5, the mqtt green light is fixed. Thanks

I've just walk tested a camera, and got no notifications via email otr mqtt. But did receive this error message a few seconds after the walk test (I wasn't doing anything else, except looking at the screen):

"There was an unexpected error. Please report it: Destination array is not long enough to copy all the items in the collection. Check array index and length."

The program then closed.

Removed email notifications, and got an mqtt notification, but having set the topic as OnGuard/{Camera}/{Area} and motion payload as {Object}

The message I received was Onguard/Hall/hallway={Object} (I was expecting {Object} to be "person"

Sorry to be a pain, I'm off to bed now so I'll leave you in peace :-)

grannysmith59 avatar Jan 01 '21 23:01 grannysmith59

That appears to be an unrelated issue from your outgoing email server. I’m still looking into that.

Can you tell me exactly how to reproduce that? If at all possible it would be good to have a click-by-click sequence after “Notifications Options” comes up. There should not be too many.

No email notifications aren't working either, I have email notifications set up to trigger every time I walk down my hallway, and haven't received any yet

When adding new addresses into the "Set notifications", I just received this error message too:

"Destination array is not long enough to copy all the items in the collection. Check array index and length"

Have you tried email notifications, and are they working?

Thanks very much for finding the MQTT bug. This was a bad one that would affect MQTT functionality. Therefore, I put Version 1.4.5 on Github.

The MQTT stuff is not quite complete. Right now:

Topic is limited to: Camera, Area, Motion, Object

Payload is limited to File, Image, Confidence

I’ll add Object for you. It needs to be there too. Next release….

I don’t know what the Destination Array stuff is yet. I’m working on it. Unfortunately, there is only limited information in the error message. I tried to make the error messages prettier, and I think that it removes information that would be helpful to me.

Sorry, just digested this.

I have been logging on to my email server the same way for over 20 years, using just the one word username that my email provider gave to me.

Including older versions of on guard that worked earlier this week using just the one word username.

ill try again in the morning using gmails server

Me too. My 10+ year old version of Outlook lets (makes) me setup my email with just my user name, no @comcast.net. For whatever reason the built-in utility I use for email insists that the name include @something.com. The changes I made for this release now make this requirement reasonably clear.

Personally, I don’t remember all the way back to V1.2 of this app. Then again, this year has been an bad blur.

I’m all the way up to Release 1.4.6 on Github. I noticed a couple of bad bugs that needed to be fixed. I still haven’t found the other bug you reported, but I’m looking for it. I know it is there someplace.

About the best I can say at this point is download 1.4.6, delete your areas (maybe your email destinations, etc) and try again.

Sorry, just digested this.

I have been logging on to my email server the same way for over 20 years, using just the one word username that my email provider gave to me.

Including older versions of on guard that worked earlier this week using just the one word username.

ill try again in the morning using gmails server

Well, I know for sure it won’t work without the @gmail.com part in the email user. I’ll fix that now to make it clear it is required.

If you were entering that as part your Email User Name I’m not sure what the problem is. I’ll look into it further.

Were you on a different computer when it worked than when it didn’t?

One thing at a time I guess.

I've always set it up with the domain, it worked on an older version using the same addresses:

A######@gmail.com Alan@alan#######.co.uk Alan@######.clara.co.uk

No, I didn't leave it blank

Hi, I've just installed v1.4.4 on another PC, and when testing the email as part of the setup wizzard, I get this error message:

"The specified string is not in the form required for an email address"

When setting notifications, the MQTT buttons don't remain "lit up" to show that they are enabled

There's also a typo in the add "Emal" Addresses dialog

I've just walk tested a camera, and got no notifications via email otr mqtt. But did receive this error message a few seconds after the walk test (I wasn't doing anything else, except looking at the screen):

"There was an unexpected error. Please report it: Destination array is not long enough to copy all the items in the collection. Check array index and length."

The program then closed.

Removed email notifications, and got an mqtt notification, but having set the topic as OnGuard/{Camera}/{Area} and motion payload as {Object}

The message I received was Onguard/Hall/hallway={Object} (I was expecting {Object} to be "person"

Sorry to be a pain, I'm off to bed now so I'll leave you in peace :-)

OK, so I added the @domainname to the email username, and it worked!

First time I've ever had to do that, and I expected it to fail

My feeling is that the destination array error, is down to the multiple email addresses.

If I set one email recipient, I receive the email notification, any more than that, and I don't

I can't test with 1.4.6 at the moment due to the setup folder being missing

I have tried multiple email addresses yesterday and it worked fine for me. I think that the problem is more complicated than that. I’m still looking for it.

Yes, I know that having to have the domain in there is weird. I was surprised that it was necessary, and I was surprised that Comcast let it through that way.

I think maybe Outlook is doing something like looking at the sending server domain and automagically adding the behind the scenes. I don’t know if you use Outlook or something else, but I know I never needed (and couldn’t use) the full email address with domain there.

It's still crashing for me with multiple email addresses set in email nfications, but it's fine with just the one.

There is another niggle I found, similar to the mqtt boxes not remaining "lit", the check box for pictures in the email notifications doesn't stay checked.

Please keep up the great work

Sorry, I haven’t been ignoring you. I’ve just been working on other things.

The checkboxes for the URLs and Email notifications aren’t currently functional. They don’t do anything (they did, but not for a long time). I’ve been meaning to make them actually work correctly or remove them, but other priorities have come up (and nobody but you noticed). The original idea was to allow the user to leave the definitions in place but allow them to be active or inactive. I’m not sure how helpful that would be.

If I had any money to hire a QA staff you’d be at the top of the list!

I still cannot reproduce the problem with multiple email addresses. I’ve looked at it and it isn’t anything obvious to me what’s going on. Usually things like that are easy to spot in the code.

Well, I'm glad I'm of help to someone!

As I said before, it seems to be doing everything I want at the moment:

I'm getting email alerts and pictures for my front door, and mqtt messages in the format i want for everywhere I want them.

I just need to get my lights to flash when there's someone at the door, but that's my problem!

I've also spent hours over the weekend trying to get a smart light switch onto (and stay connected) to my wifi. I got a new mesh wifi setup for Xmas, and the 2.4 & 5Ghz networks can't be split, and while the smart switch needs my phone to connect to the 2.4 network, my phone refuses to connect to anything but the 5Ghz one! Arghh!

I just need to get my lights to flash when there's someone at the door, but that's my problem!

Thanks

Thank you, I now have mqtt set up and binary sensors for motion created in Home Assistant

It's still crashing for me with multiple email addresses set in email nfications, but it's fine with just the one.

There is another niggle I found, similar to the mqtt boxes not remaining "lit", the check box for pictures in the email notifications doesn't stay checked.

Please keep up the great work

Thanks

Just installed 1.4.5, the mqtt green light is fixed. Thanks

I've just walk tested a camera, and got no notifications via email otr mqtt. But did receive this error message a few seconds after the walk test (I wasn't doing anything else, except looking at the screen):

"There was an unexpected error. Please report it: Destination array is not long enough to copy all the items in the collection. Check array index and length."

The program then closed.

Removed email notifications, and got an mqtt notification, but having set the topic as OnGuard/{Camera}/{Area} and motion payload as {Object}

The message I received was Onguard/Hall/hallway={Object} (I was expecting {Object} to be "person"

Sorry to be a pain, I'm off to bed now so I'll leave you in peace :-)

Arghh!

Often routers are factory setup to give the same name to the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz WiFi networks, but this is always an option. If it is setup that way you should be able to go into the router “web” site (often 192.168.X.1) and give them different names, at least temporarily. Then you should be able to force your phone to the 2.4Ghz. While I’ve always given my 5 an 2.4 different names sometimes my phone will decide to flip frequencies on me during a switch setup. Usually if you force it to 2.4 it will stay there at lease a while. You can force it to “forget” the 5, but then you need to add it back later.

You’d think that it would be cheaper for the switch companies to simply add 5Ghz support for their switches rather than suffer through the support/reputation costs of making the install harder than it needs to be. For now it seems like all the brands I’ve seen (5?) force you to use 2.4.

I just need to get my lights to flash when there's someone at the door, but that's my problem!

Thanks

Yes, it's a combined network, and only appears as one network, on a Netgear Nighthawk MR60, and while you can disable the 2.4g, you can't disable the 5g one.

I got around it in the end by switching the router and it's satellites iff, and set up my old AP again, and even then, I had to change the DNS server to google's rather than 1.1.1.1.

Sorted now thanks
