Diacritics not added automatically anymore

The keyboard used to include the diacritics needed for all the languages listed in my device settings, but they all disappeared after some update. I had to go to the keyboard settings and add each diacritic manually via "add keys to the keyboard".

Could be a few things going on here: ① "after some update"—What update? Did you renew Unexpected only, or is it a new phone? Same locale? ② @Julow, does default for "Add keys to the keyboard" depend on locale? Default has changed since you made the Compose key selectable and added Clipboard; were there diacritic changes too? ③ @paulens12, you can also have things exactly the way you want them by using a custom layout.

The keyboard now hides the diacritics if all the accented letters needed for your language are already on the keyboard. It might also replace the diacritic with the accented letter if only one letter is needed. In French, it will replace the acute accent key with é.

Does that match what you experienced ?

What you're describing would make sense, but US QWERTY is the only layout I ever use. I used to have all the diacritics as needed for the languages enabled in Android, then they all disappeared and I was left with a simple US QWERTY layout with no diacritics. Then I went into settings and put them back in the keyboard using the "add keys to the keyboard" option, although they all went into different places than they used to be. After opening this issue, I got another update and I noticed that some of them re-appeared (I had forgotten to add some from French as I rarely use it). The layout of the diacritics is still different than what I've grown accustomed to, but I'm fine with that as long as it stops changing from now on.

Sorry for the inconvenience. The goal of some of these changes was to make them move less often on other layouts and to make the US QWERTY layout more maintainable. That paradoxically made the situation worse for the US QWERTY layout, for now.
