For example on c9b6fb798541 for libaccounts-glib.dev:

$ nix-instantiate . -A libaccounts-glib
/nix/store/dc1bwwgc7lg7spm4j93yfgygm5y9gh05-libaccounts-glib-1.27.drv
$ nix-build /nix/store/dc1bwwgc7lg7spm4j93yfgygm5y9gh05-libaccounts-glib-1.27.drv --check

... does not upload the 'dev' output, while

$ nix build "/nix/store/dc1bwwgc7lg7spm4j93yfgygm5y9gh05-libaccounts-glib-1.27.drv^*" --rebuild

... does.

Evidently this doesn't happen for all derivations, though - not sure yet why.
